THE TIANANMEN CRACKDOWN: 20 YEARS ON |
|
|
Twenty years ago, China's military crushed dissent around the Tiananmen Square, protesters and students were calling for an end to official corruption and political and economic reforms. The authorities stated that "more than 3,000 civilians were wounded and over 200 died during the riot". While the exact figure remain unknown, it is likely the actual figures are higher. In the aftermath, the authorities began to hunt down those involved in the demonstrations, many civilians were detained, tortured, or imprisoned after unfair trials. According to a 2009 estimate by the Duihua Foundation, 50 people are still imprisoned for June 4 related crimes. To date, human rights defenders and activists in China continue to face police harassment and surveillance when they press the authorities to take responsibility for the crackdown while families of victims who had died during those nights in 1989 are still prohibited to openly mourn their loved ones. Join our commemoration and petition actions, where we will be laying white and red roses -- symbolizes the purity of the victims' hearts and victim's their passion -- and collection petitions which is taking place at the following times and locations: Tuesday, June 2 16:30-20:00 Wednesday, June 3 16:30-20:00 Thursday, June 4 16:30-21:00
