United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated Amnesty International on the launch of its Demand Dignity campaign to end the human rights violations that drive and deepen poverty.

During a meeting on Thursday with Irene Khan, Amnesty International Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon also congratulated Amnesty International for increasing the awareness of economic, social and cultural rights.

"On behalf of Amnesty International I thanked the Secretary-General for his support and encouragement to promote human rights in the context of the Millennium Development Goals, including at the 2010 UN Summit," said Irene Khan.

Ms. Khan presented the UN Secretary-General with a copy of her new book "The Unheard Truth: Poverty and Human Rights" which marks the start of Amnesty International's efforts to change the debate on poverty beyond economics and to include human rights at its centre.
