Papua is Indonesia's eastern-most province. The Indonesian government maintains a heavy police and military presence in Papua, whose members are accused of repeatedly intimidating members of the local indigenous community who support greater autonomy or independence from Indonesia through peaceful means. The human rights situation in Papua has deteriorated over the past few years. Theo Hesegem is currently visiting Hong Kong and assisting AHRC in research and casework on human rights in Papua.
