Join us after school or work to discuss human rights issues over a cup of coffee! The Sichuan Earthquake was a heartbreaking natural disaster which happened two years ago. Thousands of school kids and teenagers were buried under the soil and the Chinese government never disclosed the numbers of victim and their names. Tan Zuoren, an environmentalist, was sentenced to five years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power" shortly after his investigation on the shoddy construction quality of Sichuan schools, as well as his participation in setting up a victim database. At this Friday Coffee Talk, we will screen "An Investigation by Citizens", a documentary on the investigation carried out by Tan and his team. We are delighted to have Patrick Poon, our EXCO member and an expert on human rights in China, lead a discussion on Chinese citizens’ participation in exposing official wrongdoings in relation to the right to life and freedom of expression. Amnesty International released its annual death penalty statistics report, Death Sentences and Executions in 2009, revealing that at least 714 people were executed in 18 countries and at least 2,001 people were sentenced to death in 56 countries in last year. This excludes the thousands of executions that were likely to have taken place in China, where information on the death penalty remains a state secret. In a challenge to China's lack of transparency, Amnesty International has decided not to publish its own minimum figures for Chinese executions and death sentences in 2009. Estimates based on the publicly available information grossly under represent the actual number the state killed or sentenced to death.
