"Justice, justice": The July 2009 protests in Xinjiang, China
One year ago on 5 July 2009 thousands of Chinese of Uighur ethnicity demonstrated in Urumqi, the regional capital of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR). In the aftermath of the Urumqi protests, the authorities detained more than 1,400 people. Amnesty International believes that it is imperative that the Chinese authorities allow independent and impartial investigation into the events of July 2009, whilst ensuring that those providing information to the investigation are protected from harassment, intimidation or punishment. Any trials should be conducted fairly and without recourse to the death penalty.

North Korea: The crumbling state of health care in North Korea
Nearly one million people died when famine hit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) in the early 1990s. Today, food shortages and a broader economic crisis continue. The government's delayed and inadequate response to the food crisis has had a devastating impact on the health of the population. In this report, Amnesty International documents how widespread and chronic malnutrition has triggered epidemics and illnesses related to poor diet. The government must take urgent steps to address food shortages and the crumbling health care system.
