This Saturday, Burmese and global supporters mark the 21st anniversary of the 8888 uprising, the day of Burma’s largest pro-democracy uprising.
On August 8, 1988, hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens took to the streets to join a student-led pro-democracy demonstration. We honor all courageous democracy activists, especially those who have paid the ultimate price with their lives working to bring necessary change to their country.
The military regime has been taking systematic steps to exclude pro-democracy activists from the 2010 elections. The latest of these efforts include the extension of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s trial, the continued detention of 2,100 political prisoners, and as well as the unceasing systematic human rights violations against ethnic civilians.
The regime’s decision to delay the verdict of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi suggests that it is now sensitive to increased international and domestic pressure, however, mere words are not enough.
Burma’s military regime will only respond when we back words with action. Join the demonstration organized by the HK Coalition for a Free Burma*:
