Topic: "An Investigation by Citizens"
The Sichuan Earthquake was a heartbreaking natural disaster which happened two years ago. Thousands of school kids and teenagers were buried under the soil and the Chinese government never disclosed the numbers of victim and their names.
Tan Zuoren, an environmentalist, was sentenced to five years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” shortly after his investigation on the shoddy construction quality of Sichuan schools, as well as his participation in setting up a victim database.
At this Friday Coffee Talk, we will screen “An Investigation by Citizens", a documentary on the investigation carried out by Tan and his team. We are delighted to have Patrick Poon, our EXCO member and an expert on human rights in China, lead a discussion on Chinese citizens’ participation in exposing official wrongdoings in relation to the right to life and freedom of expression.
