More than half a million women die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth – one every minute – and Amnesty International is lobbying governments around the world to ensure every woman the highest attainable standard of health.

One of the worst cases is in Burkina Faso, where nearly 2,000 women die every year from maternal mortality. Indeed, this is a result of several factors: women’s low status, which undermines their right to decide whether and when to have children, and how many, lack of information on sexual and reproductive health rights, social and economic barriers, notably the cost of medical treatment, geographic barriers obstructing access to health facilities, and poor quality of treatment due to shortages of medical supplies and qualified personnel.

Although the Burkina Faso government took action in 2006 to subsidize maternal care by 80%, maternal health services are still not available and accessible to women that need them.

Medical specialists must be aware of the importance of maternal care during pregnancy and childbirth and you can make a difference. We are appealing to doctors or medical workers to join our “Clinic Campaign” to urge the Burkina Faso government to improve maternal health.

About the Clinic Campaign
The Clinic Campaign is an attempt for Amnesty International Hong Kong (AIHK) to join forces with local clinics to urge the Burkina Faso government to improve maternal healthcare. As medical professionals, we believe that each and every one of you can play a crucial role.

In response to the exceptionally high maternal mortality rate in Burkina Faso, AIHK has produced postcards to be signed by individuals who would like to see maternal healthcare improve in Burkina Faso and we are appealing for your support of this campaign.

Participating clinics would display our posters and place our postcards at their clinic. Visiting patients who would like to support the cause could sign a postcard. Signed postcards would be kept by the clinics until delivery is arranged by AIHK.

All materials will be provided and delivered by AIHK at no cost. When all the postcards have been signed, AIHK will collect and mail them to Burkina Faso.

All participating clinics that collect more than 10 postcards will be given a Certificate of Participation from AIHK.
