The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we all have the right to life and none of us shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Yet countries often deprive people of their inalienable rights in the name of justice.
In 2010, 95 countries have abolished capital punishment altogether. However, in 2009, 819 death sentences were issued in Asia alone, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Furthermore, China, Bangladesh, Japan, North Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam continue to execute prisoners. We believe that most of the executions were carried out in China.
Although Hong Kong has abolished the death penalty, yet we still need to strive for a worldwide abolishment of capital punishment. AIHK and the Joint Committee for the Abolition of Death Penalty in Hong Kong, will be organizing a “Say No to Death Penalty” to collect signatures from the public. Leaflets will be distributed to invite the public to join our “Urgent Action” that calls for the pardoning of death row inmates.
