The 1984 Bhopal tragedy has left a devastating mark on the world that will not be forgotten. After 25 years, the impact of the deadly chemical leak still affects the local people. India's government has not been able to provide the villages nearby various basic needs such as clean water or even medical care. The efforts to provide rehabilitation have fallen short for victims that still are living with the disastrous impact of the leak. On 2 December 2009, the people of Bhopal will mark the 25th anniversary of the destructive incident. Amnesty International will act in solidarity with the people of Bhopal to highlight the ongoing human rights impacts of the 1984 leak.
To make matters worse, the factory site has not been cleaned up yet, and more than 100,000 people suffer from health problems. In addition, companies such as Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals that are involved with this tragedy have evaded accountability and obstructed the efforts of victims to secure reparation.
ACT NOW!
In order to help this cause, Amnesty will be collecting signatures to petition Dow Chemicals to proactively engage with the government of India to ensure that the site is properly decontaminated and that adequate reparations are made to those affected. Amnesty will also have a candle vigil in remembrance of those who died and those who are still suffering from the disaster and injustice.
