In light of the upcoming Beijing Olympics and the torch rally that will be touring in Hong Kong, Amnesty International (AI) would like to engage with the general public to call upon the Chinese authorities to uphold and to honor its promises during the selection process of the Olympics, repeatedly drawing a link between the Olympic Games and human rights and made assurances that the human rights situation in China would improve in the run-up to the event.
AI welcomes the Olympics to be host in China and genuinely sees this as an opportunity where human rights conditions will improve as a result of the Games. However, given the recent development in China, that window of opportunity is getting smaller and smaller unless China makes some drastic change, so as to leave a positive legacy after the Olympics.
AIHK will be setting up a booth in the city to meet with the public, not only to making our presence, but also to spread the message of AI. We hope to meet you and to collect messages at the following places:
Saturday, April 26, 2008 13:00-18:00
East Point Road, Causeway Bay
Sunday, April 27, 2008 13:00-18:00
Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mongkok
