Child Labour behind Smartphones

Amnesty International and Afrewatch released a report “This is what we die for: Human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo power the global trade in cobalt” in mid January. It reveals that major electronics brands, including Apple and Samsung, have been failing to do basic checks to ensure that the material cobalt, which is used in their products, is not mined by child labourers.

The smallest child was 7, they worked long hours each day and were exposed to cobalt without any protective equipment to protect them from lung or skin diseases. Most of them suffered from violence and were underpaid.

Millions of people enjoy the benefits of new technology but rarely ask how they are made. It is time for the big brands to take responsibility for the mining of raw materials that make part of their lucrative products.

New Year blessing to human rights activists in China

We wish you all a happy new year of the Monkey!

As Lunar New Year was approaching and it had been almost 6 months since the start of the “July 9 Crackdown”, we organized a joint action with various local human rights concern groups. We urge the Chinese government for the immediate release of human rights lawyers and activists, who are illegally detained and sentenced. Our aim of organizing the event was to raise public concerns towards the challenges faced by civil society and the human rights situation in China.

We set up street booths in Wanchai, Hung Ham and Causeway Bay in January to distribute red packets and invited the public to write the “福” calligraphy (Chinese character of good fortune). Each red packet contained two jujubes and one fennel seed, which symbolizes “return home promptly” in Chinese.
