United States: Albert Woodfox was released!

On his 69th birthday, 19 February 2016, Louisiana prisoner Albert Woodfox walked free – 43 years after he was first put into solitary confinement. Prior to this settlement, Woodfox’s conviction had been overturned three times. On June 8, 2015, Federal Judge James Brady granted Woodfox unconditional release and barred the state from retrying him. However, Judge Brady’s ruling was overturned on appeal.

Those of you working on his case over the course of the last five years have generated more than 700,000 actions on behalf of Albert and the Angola 3. A big thank you for all of your hard work and support especially to AI Club students from various international schools who have taken action for Albert in Write for Rights 2015.

Albert took the time to thank the many people, including Amnesty International, who helped him secure his freedom:“I also wish to thank the many members of the International Coalition to Free the Angola 3, Amnesty International, and the Roddick Foundation, all of whom supported me through this long struggle.”

URGENT ACTION

Demand Hong Kong Government to urge Chinese authorities to release the 5 booksellers unconditionally

We have issued an open letter to the Chief Executive on 4 March 2016, calls for the Hong Kong government to urge the mainland authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the booksellers, and facilitate their return to Hong Kong or another destination of their choice, unless they are formally charged with an internationally recognizable criminal offence and tried in full compliance with international legal standards of fair trial, and pending their release, ensure without delay that the five booksellers have regular and unrestricted access to families and lawyers of their own choosing, are only held in recognized places of detention, and have an effective opportunity to challenge the legality of their detention.

Act now and speak out for the 5 booksellers!
No one in Hong Kong shall be disposed to such kind of treatment. Human rights, especially the right to liberty and security, shall not be undermined under any circumstances.

North Korea: Connection Denied

Ordinary North Koreans caught using mobile phones to contact loved ones who have fled abroad, risk being sent to political prison camps or other detention facilities as the government tightens its stranglehold on people’s use of communication technology, reveals Amnesty International in a new report published.

Connection Denied: Restrictions on Mobile Phones and Outside Information in North Korea, documents the intensified controls, repression and intimidation of the population since Kim Jung-un came to power in 2011.

“To maintain their absolute and systematic control, the North Korean authorities are striking back against people using mobile phones to contact family abroad," said Arnold Fang, East Asia Researcher at Amnesty International.
