HUMAN RIGHTS WORK IN CHINA

The Chinese government has responded to the development of civil society by jailing and persecuting people for peacefully expressing their views, holding religious beliefs not sanctioned by the state, advocating democratic reform and human rights, and defending the rights of others. China’s Internet firewall continues to block popular social media sites. The authorities continue to repress Tibetan, Uighur, Mongolian and other ethnic minority populations. On the international stage, China has grown increasingly confident and aggressive in punishing countries whose leaders speak publicly about its human rights record.
