Angélique Kidjo

Angélique Kidjo

Le Balai Citoyen

Y’en a marre

Musician Angélique Kidjo and 3 African youth activists honoured with Amnesty International award

Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award will be shared between Grammy-winning artist Angélique Kidjo, and the activist groups Y’en a marre from Senegal, le Balai Citoyen from Burkina Faso and Lutte pour le Changement (LUCHA) from DRC.

Angélique Kidjo fled her homeland Benin in the 1980s after being pressured to perform for the country’s repressive regime. In a 40-year-career, she has been a prominent campaigner for freedom of expression and for the education of girls in Africa, as well as against female genital mutilation.

LUCHA (Lutte pour le Changement, or “fight for change”) is a community-based youth movement committed to peaceful protest in Goma, eastern DRC. It focuses on social issues, human rights and protecting civilians from armed groups. At least nine people connected to the movement are currently in jail.

Le Balai Citoyen (“The Citizen's Broom”) is a political grassroots movement in Burkina Faso committed to peaceful protest. The group ran political education schools to encourage young people to vote ahead of elections in November 2015.

Y’en a marre (“Fed Up”) is a group of Senegalese rappers and journalists to encourage young people to register to vote. Three of the group's founders were arrested in February 2012 after helping to organize a peaceful sit-in protest against the government.

All will be honoured at the awards ceremony in Dakar, Senegal, on 28 May.

Human Rights Friday: The Shrinking Space of Press Freedom

Hong Kong's press freedom has been facing huge challenge since the handover - outspoken radio hosts were sacked, a renowned journalist was attacked, and more recently, Ming Pao's Deputy Chief Editor was fired out of the blue. All of these events stirred up attention from the general public on the freedom of press. Across the Zhujiang River Estuary, Macau is also facing similar, if not worse, situations. How is new media countering the huge pressure from the government and providing neutral news reports to people in Macau?

In this Human Rights Friday talk, we have invited two guest speakers to talk about the shrinking space of press freedom in the twin cities.

Date: Friday, 27 May 2016
Time: 19:00 - 21:00
Venue: Hong Kong In-media, 9/F, Foo Tak Bldg, 365-367 Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai

***This event will be conducted in Cantonese only.
