地點:KUC Space(九龍佐敦道2號)

New Concept in Travel - Human Rights Tourism

When travelling, we would like to relax and to ensure our own safety. As a tourist, apart from visiting tourist spots and experiencing the local delicacies, to what extent do we understand the human rights situation in other countries? Would our expenses become government’s capital to invade citizens' human rights? Besides, have we adversely affected local people’s livelihood when enjoying the facilities there?

Human Rights Tourism: From Hong Kong to the World

We would like to promote the concept of “human rights tourism”. Firstly, we can increase our understanding towards local human rights situation and to ensure our safety there. Secondly, we can understand people’s lives better. Thirdly, we can travel in a more human-rights-friendly way, or to avoid travelling to places with dismal human rights records. We can hence reduce the profits for businesses and government which have invaded people’s human rights.

In August, we have invited travel blogger Fred Lam, and Maggie, who founded a hostel in Hong Kong, to share how tourism can make a positive impact in the local community and how we can become human rights tourists.

Date: Tuesday, 9th August, 2016
Time: 19:00
Venue: KUC Space (Nathan Road 2, Kowloon)

Guests:
Travel Blogger Fred Lam
Hoho Hotel Founder Maggie

Human Rights Magazine Summer Issue published!

Hong Kong is regarded as a society with the rule of law. China also has its own so-called "rule of law". But what is the rule of law?

The Summer Issue of the Human Rights Magazine features "the Rule of Law and Human Rights". Relevant international human rights standard, local cases, as well as global figures are discussed. Moreover, Mr. Paul Shieh, SC and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, shares his views on the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Please also read our latest leaflet on "the Basic Law and Human Rights Protection" (Chinese Only). It shows how the Court of Final Appeal protects our right of peaceful assembly through the Basic Law, ICCPR and the Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance by the court case of Long Hair on unauthorized assembly in 2005.

地點:KUC Space(九龍佐敦道2號)

Human Rights Friday: How Rule of Law Can Protect Human Rights

In Hong Kong, how can the current judicial institutions protect citizens’ rights? Over the past years, civil organizations have striven for justice over various livelihood issues. How can we translate those experience into future practices? In the coming Human Rights Friday, we have invited experienced activists and practicing barrister to share their views.

The first article of Universal Declaration of Human Rights writes, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” If we need to put protection of human rights into practice, rule of law is indispensable. This is because the rule of law provides the framework to regulate the use of executive power, and hence safeguard civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights.

Date: Friday, 29th July 2016
Time: 19:00
Venue: KUC Space (2 Nathan Road, Kowloon)

Guests:
Member of the Linkwatch Chan Po Ying
Practicing barrister / The Secretary of AIHK Chow Hang Tung

John Jenette

GOOD NEWS: Norway adopts historic law on gender recognition

Remember John Jeanette, one of the cases in Write for Rights 2014? Here is a piece of good news on her case.

On Monday 6 June, the Norwegian Parliament finally adopted the law on legal gender recognition which will give transgender people access to legal gender recognition through a quick, accessible and transparent procedure.

Crucially, it will allow individuals to self-determine their gender and do away with Norway’s shameful legacy of compulsory requirements that are discriminatory and violate a range of human rights.

John Jeanette can finally be the woman she is, and have identification papers that are consistent with this.

We thank all those who have shown support for John Jeanette in our Write for Rights campaign.
