Syrian refugee reunited with his family in Australia

Syrian refugee Fadi Mansour finally reunited with his family in Melbourne, Australia, on 11 June.

Fadi had spent more than a year arbitrarily detained in inhumane conditions in the “Problematic Passengers’ Room” of Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport. Amnesty International first called for his release from the airport in December 2015 and campaigned extensively on his case around the anniversary of his detention in the airport on 15 March, generating media attention on his situation. He had then been held in the Adana Removal Centre in south-eastern Turkey since 19 March. His lawyer challenged his continued administrative detention at the Adana administrative court. A decision was still pending when Fadi Mansour was issued with a global special humanitarian visa around week in mid-June.

During a phone conversation with Amnesty International, Fadi Mansour spoke of his happiness at finally being free and his gratitude to all those who appealed to the Turkish authorities to achieve his release from detention.

Introduction to Human Rights

International Human Rights

Free online courses to learn more about human rights

In November 2015, Amnesty International introduced its first Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to promote the right to freedom of expression with EdX, which is currently accessible in archived format. We have collected some additional online courses on human rights from a variety of different providers, which are free of charge, and fully accessible online - and here are two recommendations:

Introduction to Human Rights provides a general overview of human rights that is easy to understand, such as ethics, morals and equality. It also covers contemporary global human rights agendas, such as advocating the rights of women and children. This 6- hour course is available in English and Spanish.

International Human Rights provides a comprehensive overview of human rights law and its enforcement, such as when may human rights be restricted or interfered by the state. Topics such as human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights are covered. This 10-week course draws on different jurisdictions, which encourages critical thinking and reflection on the adequacy of our laws to uphold human rights. This course is available only in English.

All in all, participants can choose the appropriate courses according to the durations, languages and topics of the respective courses. It is definitely an interesting and interactive way to learn human rights. Don’t miss out on these fantastic courses!
