Syria: 10-year-old girl to receive urgent surgery following evacuation from besieged Madaya

Ghina Ahmad Wadi was seriously wounded by sniper fire from a Syrian government forces checkpoint in Madaya on 2 August. She was shot in her left thigh, causing a complex bone fracture and a severing of a nerve. Ghina’s family appealed to the Syrian authorities to allow her to be evacuated for hospitalization – a request which had been denied for almost two weeks.

According to the Syrian Red Crescent, Ghina and her mother were escorted from the besieged town to Damascus overnight on 13 August. The move follows appeals by the girl’s UK-based aunt, supported by Amnesty International and others.

Amnesty International urges, all parties to Syria’s armed conflict must protect civilians and ensure humanitarian aid, including critical medical supplies, are allowed into Madaya and other besieged areas as a priority. They must allow and facilitate, where possible, the evacuation of civilians who wish to leave.

【The 6th Human Rights Documentary Film Festival】

This year the Festival will be held from 2 to 15 September 2016 at Broadway Cinematheque, with the theme "Arts and Human Rights". Several documentaries about the voicing out for human rights through arts were chosen.

Recommended Movie : Art and Human Rights Series - Cartoonists: Footsoldiers of Democracy?

Just like the best political cartoons, the documentary Cartoonists, Footsoldiers of Democracy manages to synthesize a vast subject in ways both insightful and, frightfully funny. The French director Stéphanie Valloatto weaves together the portraits of 12 cartoonists from countries as varied as China, Burkina Faso, Russia, Palestine, Israel, USA and France. Cartoonists manage to suggest the necessity of a disarming and often hilarious form of journalistic commentary and how a lot of world leaders are so acutely aware of the power cartoonists wield.
