BRAVE for 35 years -
35th Anniversary of Amnesty International Hong Kong

Amnesty International Hong Kong was officially established in 1982, and we have been fighting for human rights along with Hong Kongers bravely for 35 years.
BRAVE, the human rights defenders global campaign, is launched this month by our International Secretariat and in next two years, we would walk along with people who have been defending our rights and keep on fighting for them.

Be BRAVE and Stand for the Truth

"Amnesty International gives helpless people hope.

I wish that there will always be press freedom.  Press freedom is the basis for all protection because legislation cannot protect us against all forms of human rights abuses.  Yet, the existence of press freedom can expose any abuse to truly provide protection.  For example in Hong Kong, although we do not have democracy in the vote system, our order has not totally failed as we have press freedom to make up for the deficiencies in our lack of democracy."

— Ching Cheong. Commentator, Years with us: since the 70s

World Refugee Day – Movie Screening of “Warehoused” & Discussion

Do you know where is the largest refugee camp in the world? Germany? Australia? Sweden?

The answer is…… Kenya.

In today’s world, more than 80% of the refugees reside in “low-income” countries, and more than 2.6 million people have no choice but to stay in refugee camps. On average, they have to wait in the camps for at least 17 years, during which they cannot work, nor leave the camp area, and thus can only rely on international aids to survive.

In the past 25 years, the Dadaab Refugee Complex in Kenya, the largest refugee camp in the world, has hosted 340,000 refugees. How do they face every day’s live? What will be the challenges and way-outs for them?

In the lead up to World Refugee Day, Amnesty International Hong Kong joins hands with Health in Action to host a free movie screening of <Warehoused>. The crew had been to Kenya’s Dadaab Refugee Complex to document the daily lives of the refugees in Dadaab. This event aims to introduce the Hong Kong public to the global refugee crisis from a more comprehensive perspective. This is the first public screening of the film in Hong Kong.

Guest:
Dr. Au Yiu-kai (Paul) - share his personal experience as a humanitarian worker in serving refugees in Palestine, Kenya and Sudan.
An asylum seeker from Somalia - how he managed to escape the tragedy of Dadaab, but ended up being caught in another entrapment – Hong Kong.
