"China Human Rights Lawyers’ Day" - Screening of 709 Fellows
The 709 Crackdown refers to the suppression of human rights lawyers by the Chinese government in an unprecedented scale which began on 9 July 2015 and with over 300 rights lawyers, their families and human rights defenders implicated. Many were questioned and or detained, banned from traveling out of mainland China, put under residential surveillance, formally arrested or even enforced disappeared.
The Chinese government sees the human rights lawyers as the top of a list of five social sectors in the country working to topple state power from bottom-up, making them hence the target to be hard-hit. The path for rights defence is doomed to be thorny but why are these lawyers so persevering?
709 Fellows is a documentary by a veteran journalist Lo King-wah. Through images and narratives, the director depicts the stories of 14 brave lawyers, their families as well as friends implicated in the crackdown, and how determined they are in taking on the path in spite of all the hardship, the stories of convictions and perseverance, of love and concern in the pursuit for justice.
